During the pandemic, I moved with my family to our beach house at Barra do Sahy, a small beach on the coast of São Paulo.
Everything was in lockdown.
We experienced the fears and uncertainties of that moment, covid in brazil was very difficult, our president at the time denied the events and the vaccine took a while to arrive.
But also we experienced the wonderful and challenging of being isolated together 24 hours a day in a very different setting full of nature. One day I photographed my daughter, Olivia, playing with her shadow in the curtains. I was motivated to observe the situation and capture it as part of a resolution I made to myself to try to see the positive moments in the intense routine we were in. I feel this image is a faithful representation of our experience of the pandemic – it is a picture of a shadow, but it brings a lot of light at the same time. This shows the contrasting situation that we (and most other families) were in.
In June 2023, I had the opportunity to meet in person and talk with amazing photographers and mothers about the Eye mama book at Royal Photographic Society, Bristol.
